In the homeschool community, there is often a push for a more relaxed, "it takes a village" approach to education. We trust our neighbors, we trust our friends, and we want to believe the best in the people who step up to volunteer or teach.

But when you step into the role of a co-op director, blind trust is a liability you cannot afford.

The Hard Truth About Safety Your first duty is not to be liked. It is to keep the kids on your property safe. That means enforcing strict, corporate-level safety standards in a grassroots environment. Every single adult who is in a position of authority or trust with children must provide a clean, filterable Vulnerable Sector Check. No exceptions, no excuses, and absolutely no "I'll get it to you next week."

When the Red Flags Wave If a teacher or volunteer lies to your face, stalls, or suddenly has a dozen reasons why they can't produce a basic background check, that is your cue to act. You terminate the relationship immediately. It is an uncomfortable conversation, but discomfort is the price of leadership.

The Community Fallout Here is the part they don't warn you about: when you make the hard, correct call to remove an un-vetted individual, you might not get a thank you. In fact, you might watch families in your collective pack up and attend a bootleg camp hosted by that exact same un-vetted person.

Let them.

You cannot control the safety standards other parents are willing to accept for their own children. You can only control the standard on your property. Let those families walk out the door, knowing that your co-op retains its integrity, its safety, and its operational standard.

Never compromise on the safety checks. The parents who truly value what you are building will respect the boundary.
